The Price of a Blink
A jolt. A jarring screech. Then, silence.
Rosina blinked, disoriented. Gone was the oppressive darkness, replaced by a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors. Lush, emerald meadows stretched as far as the eye could see, dotted with wildflowers in every shade imaginable. The air thrummed with the melody of unseen songbirds, a symphony sweeter than any she'd ever heard. The scent of honeysuckle and jasmine filled her senses, so intoxicating it made her head spin.
Laughter, light and musical, drifted on the breeze. Rosina turned, her heart skipping a beat at the sight before her. Ethereal beings, draped in shimmering robes that shimmered like moonlight on water, danced in a circle, their movements fluid and graceful. They beckoned her closer, their smiles radiating warmth and a promise of untold joy.
As Rosina hesitantly joined the dance, a wave of euphoria washed over her. Every worry, every burden, seemed to melt away. Here, in this paradise, she felt a sense of belonging she'd never known. Days, or perhaps weeks, bled into one another, a blissful haze of laughter, music, and untroubled existence.
Then, a discordant note pierced the symphony. A single raven, its feathers an inky black against the vibrant backdrop, landed on a nearby rock. Its obsidian eyes seemed to bore into Rosina, a flicker of something unsettling within their depths. A shiver ran down her spine, the first tremor of unease in this perfect world.
The once joyous laughter of the ethereal beings began to sound hollow, their smiles strained. The vibrant colors seemed to lose their luster, replaced by a sickly pallor. The sweet fragrance of the flowers morphed into a suffocating cloying scent. Panic clawed at Rosina's throat as she realized the paradise around her was crumbling, revealing a grotesque underbelly.
The once lush meadows were now a barren wasteland, the ground cracked and parched. The ethereal beings, their forms twisted and grotesque, cackled with malice that sent chills down her spine. The raven, its eyes glowing with an infernal light, cawed triumphantly.
Rosina's scream echoed in the emptiness, a stark contrast to the chilling silence that followed. She lay crumpled on the cold, hard ground, the twisted remains of a car wreck surrounding her. The moon, a cold, indifferent observer, cast its pale light upon the scene.
In a blink, Rosina's life had changed forever. The price of a single moment of weakness, a single stolen slumber, was an eternity trapped in her own personal hell, a chilling reminder of the consequences of letting go of the reins, even for a moment.
